This weekend I was delivered a bit of a startling revelation: if it’s difficult to find PHP developers in certain parts of the world – say California – does this mean that PHP is beginning the journey to Cobol-land? I’ve been a PHP developer for about 8 years now, and an efficient, creative, and proficient developer for about 5-6 of these years. Although I’ve delved into other arenas of online application development such as .NET (VB/C#), it remains my favourite to date due to ease of development, excellent libraries and documentation, and rapid results. Although I am currently operating in PM capacity, I find a bit of time every day to work on my CMS, whip up a cool new feature for a client, or peruse the latest news on Zend or www.php.net. I don’t envision that it’s heading off anytime soon – with a steady stream of new builds and versions, it differs greatly from Perl, which has only released 1 new version in the past X number of years. Still, going back to my original point, perhaps I should seriously revisit my resolution of several months prior and learn Flex. Flex developers are even more difficult to find, and hence command higher salaries. Mind you… money is not the end all for me. It’s certainly a point of contemplation, but I am also seeking a life of joy. Hopefully these two are not mutually exclusive.
